Requesting Web Hosting
- Fill out a Memo of Understanding (MOU): www.siuc.edu/webservices/web/memo.php
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - A memorandum of understanding (MOU or MoU) is a document describing a bilateral or multilateral agreement between parties. It expresses a convergence of will between the parties, indicating an intended common line of action. It most often is used in cases where parties either do not imply a legal commitment or in situations where the parties cannot create a legally enforceable agreement.
Once this is filled out, print it and mail (MC 6819) or fax (618-453-1445) it to Web Services. The Site Owner and Web Designate are the only two people that can request or change the password.
- Web Services will create the new web account and notify either the account owner or web designate by phone. A temporary home page will be placed on your site.
- Both the account owner and the web designate will be subscribed to the web server list-serv. This is an email account that will notify all users of any web server updates, planned outages, maintenance, etc.
- Currently, users are able to connect to their web account by web editor or FTP client:
Host:cochise.web.siu.edu
Username: the account name
Password: can be retrieved from the MOU
Directory: /httpdocs/ **note: all files MUST be placed inside this directory
For those that have "tilda accounts" leave the Directory blank.
- Websites must meet all SIUC requirements policies, state and federal laws which include copyright.
Applications and Web Development Options
Currently there are three options for website owners. First, is a basic website where the user develops the site manually or using a program like Dreamweaver. Second, is the blogging software WordPress that can also be used for content management, and third is the newly implemented Cascade Server Content Management System (CMS).
Manual Development
All development is expected to be done by the website owner. It is assumed that website owners who choose to develop their site manually are familiar with their chosen method of website creation and editing. Interactive Services provides limited support for manually developed sites and cannot provide training. Interactive Services does offer some templates to begin this process.
Wordpress
Get an overview of WordPress at http://wordpress.org/
To request a WordPress install or to request the SIU theme be added to your WordPress site please do so through a help ticket.
Cascade Server Content Managemet System (CMS)
The CMS will make updating websites easier for many departments. Templates will be created and supported and training will be provided to those who choose to move to the CMS. Interactive Services will work closely with departments who choose to use the CMS to assist in development of site structure and content building and gathering.
The Chancellor has approved a list of websites which we call the “First 50″ that we will begin working on to meet the University’s new brand requirements. These websites were selected by our department because of either their importance to the recruitment effort, their reference in existing recruitment materials, or the amount of web traffic they receive. Many of these sites will use the CMS and our current focus is on those sites. If your department is not on the "First 50" list but you wish to be contacted when we are ready to move on to other sites, please send an email to web1@siu.edu and you will be put on a list of possible future sites to be moved.
